What to Do with One Day in Tofino – Surf in Tofino

A Vancouver Island Road Trip – Day 3

The goal of this day was to learn how to surf in Tofino. I tried surfing one other time, but I don’t really count it. I was 19, in Indonesia, and it was only for 20 mins and pretty informal.

With a full day available, our perfect day included includes learning how to surf in Tofino, and life changing burritos.

But first, Coffee (and Breakfast)

It was our first morning in Tofino and it was rather gloomy/rainy. It was only spitting so we headed to Rhino Coffee.

This place is popular. The line was long, but worth it. I had a breakfast sandwich and a cappuccino. We took our breakfast and headed to an area with a nice view point.

Our nice breakfast view

It started to officially rain at this point so we headed back to our airbnb.

We had to get ready for surfing anyways.

Surf’s Up – Learning How to Surf in Tofino

Learning how to surf in Tofino was fun. We went with a local surf company. Our instructor helped me a lot. The goal was effectively to stand up.

We would walk into the water, lay flat on to the board and paddle really fast.

Callum accidentally jammed his finger on the ocean floor at this point. His arms are longer than the instructors so he paddled earlier than he probably should have.

I kept getting salt water into my eyes and it burned. I thought it was sunscreen and tried to wash it out and it burned more. This was when I realized it was the water and not the sunscreen. I didn’t let this deter me though, and kept trying to stand up.

Even though I didn’t have success standing up, I still had an incredible time and would try surfing again. I can see why people love it.

Best Burrito of my Life

For dinner we headed to Tacofino, and I had the best burrito of my life. This was my first burrito, but I bet it will still be the best.

Note from Taylor from the future: I still think about this burrito regularly. It’s four years later and I hope to eat it again one day. I still think it’s the best.

I had the crispy chicken burrito, and recommend this to anyone who wants a life changing burrito. It’s worth any lines you may encounter.

Cox Bay Beach

After dinner, Callum suggested that we head to Cox Bay Beach to watch the sunset.

Once we arrived and parked the car, I accidentally had a bit of a nap, but surfing was quite tiring.

After my brief snooze, we headed to the beach. We walked along the beach for a bit before we sat on a nice log. The sunset was beautiful. This is a great place to watch the sunset as well.

After the sun set, we headed back to our airbnb and packed up as we had to leave early the next morning to drive across the island. We were taking a ferry to Vancouver the next day.
